Certain Linux news sites always get comments about hardware decoding of video on just about any news story about Firefox. However, it looks like hardware _compositing_ matters a lot. WebRender makes 2008/2009 Macs with Core 2 Duo & Nvidia graphics running Linux viable for video.

At least these Macs worked for video running Firefox on El Capitan. But pre-WebRender they were too slow for video when running Linux.
