Doesn't this require inverse trig though? Or am I wrong (or is that not really a concern even if I'm not)

It actually eliminates almost all the trig! See: https://github.com/pcwalton/pathfinder/blob/d5ba6ab6da5da02ee16240c17e0d9ce5506f70d8/geometry/src/stroke.rs#L343 … https://github.com/pcwalton/pathfinder/blob/d5ba6ab6da5da02ee16240c17e0d9ce5506f70d8/geometry/src/stroke.rs#L134 … https://github.com/pcwalton/pathfinder/blob/d5ba6ab6da5da02ee16240c17e0d9ce5506f70d8/geometry/src/outline.rs#L384 …

raqote has a simple implementation of round joins and caps that uses no trig: https://github.com/jrmuizel/raqote/blob/master/src/stroke.rs#L139 …. I'm not sure how it compares to what pathfinder is doing. It just uses the normals.

I think this is the same technique.
