--host is what you want. --host is the automake option that will set the compiler target you want to build for.

@MikeHommey@erincandescent I actually was using --host. Still didn’t work. I think this is partially the Cargo build script’s fault, though.

You specified target, not host (Now why Autoconf gives everything a target option WHICH IS ONLY EVER USEFUL WHEN BUILDING GCC AND BINUTILS is a separate question)

In other words: Autoconf is wrong here not because it silently picked the wrong compiler (It picked the default one! You didn't tell it otherwise!) but because it didn't go "Error: You're not building a single-target compiler, --target is nonsense"
