I wish that Daniel Berlin spend some more time in answering Mike Pall's arguments. He hasn't really answered Mike's argument that compilers focus their optimizations along a single execution path whereas optimal case for an interpreter loop would be to optimize for all paths.

For what it’s worth I tend to side with Daniel. It’s not true that compilers focus their optimizations along a single path. For register allocation it’s almost the case that the opposite is true, though it highly depends on the algorithm.
