Next step could be maybe: it's great that software X doesn't try to solve Y :-D

I've slowly drifted to "it's sad X wouldn't get any funding because it's too experimental or too much of an obscure tool" (even if, say, mundane things could depend on X), for my side-projects even if some of them could theoretically be funded, finding the right people is hard!

but also features in larger projects (e.g. Rust) that I'd want to work on but are lower-priority funding is a large part of why some changes get dragged along for years, in rustc, and especially around IDE-readiness

It’s unfortunate that so much essential software has trouble getting funding because nobody will pay for it. Amazing that software as valuable and complex as Rust is free and wouldn’t succeed if they weren’t.

There is plenty of software that doesn’t do Y for reasons other than funding.

I think "It's partially my own fault it does not do Y. I could submit a patch or give them money."

Or "it's sad there wasn't enough time to implement Y in software X"
