Actually hot take: Modern C++ is less safe than classic C++, which is less safe than C.

Ah okay... although I disagree with references. I can't think how passing a reference is any less safe than passing a raw pointer, although that could be a hole in my knowledge. Explain?

A lot of it for me is the classic "How many times is the destructor called in this code?" It's not obvious and I wouldn't expect anyone with less than ~2 years of C++ experience to know it. References can make lifetimes trickier than raw pointers.
