I am completely certain that if I proposed deref coercions today there would be a crowd up in arms about how important it is that they know that the address-of and period operators don't run arbitrary code.

This quickly becomes the language-vs-libraries thing; it's a long enough topic not to bother revisiting, esp. as I (broadly) lost. I am of course glad for what conservatism Deref has, though I (perhaps wrongly?) read boats' point here as to frame such conservatism as excessive.

(such framing is totally consistent and reasonable with libraries carrying more weight; it's almost definitionally an argument for increasing expressivity, which is why I argued against. but again, ship sailed: everything from rc to vec to green threads are in libraries now.)
