I train Rust since 4 years (Meetup, Hack & Learn and actually as a paid trainer for 3 years now) and I _hate_ it when people bring up "learnability" in language RFCs. Most of the time, it's a bit of anecdata, scrapped together.
It’s extremely uncharitable to describe the problems with the inconsistency of turbofish as a “gut feeling”.

I agree with the inconsistency, I disagree with the inconsistency being a severe learning problem. It's standard fare. The lack of assessments by quantifying or at least properly qualifying of learning problem has been a problem in this and in previous RFCs.

I have raised this point multiple times. None of the times, any team member has come forward with a conclusive answers that goes beyond a very elaborate "I say so". I maintain that the turbofish is at best miniscule. Sure, it's an opinion.
