It kind of is. For example, xxHash is roughly 32 times faster than SHA-256. The notion with cryptohashes is that you shouldn't be able to brute-force compute a preimage, so the operation can't be trivial.

Blocking the CPU core doesn't mean it needs to block rendering, but when we give main-thread JS sync APIs, that's what folks do. I guess another point in the design space would be to make crypto worker-only?
