I dislike this background suspicious-adversarial framing of interviews, and regret the extent to which I’ve perpetuated it, but I suspect it can only really change if the whole structure of the employment relationship changes with it. Academia goes way beyond credentialism. The right advisor / mentor gets your foot in the door for jobs before they're ever listed publicly. This is also somewhat true for industry, but nothing like in academia.
