It’s pretty clear why Apple disabled subpixel AA for text in Mojave. If you force-enable it, dark mode breaks all kinds of apps (including Firefox) that assume the background color of UI elements is light.

They got rid of their last non-retina product within days of pushing mojave upgrade notifications.

Mojave still runs on older machines that they’ll probably keep supporting for years. That’s a bit un-Apple. But anti-aliasing text on dark backgrounds has always been sucky on every platform. Something about gamma I think.
