I had been using rust for a while when the graphics team was tasked to work on WebRender. The people who had no experience with rust learned it very quickly because they already had a code base to work with / learn from / get their hands on.

Fiddling/playing with real code gets a lot of people further than reading I think (doesn't exclude reading books and tutorials but no one gets proficient at c++ without exploring/trying things out either) once you have first hand experience asking the right question is easier
