PSA: macOS Mojave makes views layer-backed by default when they get added to a window. This means you might need to call -[NSOpenGLContext update] when you didn’t need to before, because changing layer-backedness requires calling that method on any associated NSOpenGLContexts.

Another way to fix this—and the way I plan to do it in winit—is to call -[NSView setWantsLayer:YES] explicitly on your view before attaching the NSOpenGLContext to it. That way your context will stay properly attached when the view is added to a window.
