When I started I would just write tiny throwaway scripts in Perl and not think twice about it. Now my thought process is: “Perl” “Perl’s outdated, I should use JS instead” “I don’t want to deal with NPM, let’s do Rust” “I don’t want to deal with Cargo” “Uh…Ruby?”

I agree, for everything but throwaway scripts :) In that case, global gem installs are convenient.
