Another unpopular opinion: Don’t blame Linux for overcommit. Blame Unix for the fork/exec model.

Isn't this a side effect of Linux not actually duplicating pages until a write access happens? If the majority of pages is read-only accessed anyway, the overcommit isn't a problem. We used this quite nicely in the Drakensang Online server where we spawn a new process per map.
