Another unpopular opinion: Don’t blame Linux for overcommit. Blame Unix for the fork/exec model.

You’d have to ask a longtime kernel developer…overcommit is a very old decision :) I assume there was user demand, or else Linux, FreeBSD, etc. wouldn’t all have implemented overcommit. Interestingly, Solaris seems to have held the line (maybe because it relies on swap?)…
