Is there any syntax in Rust where replacing some white space with no white space will result in any change other than a compile error?
Sure. String literals.
If you're using a decent shell, you can use cmp <(tr -d '\n\t' < http://file1.rs ) <(tr -d '\n\t' < http://file2.rs ) rather than temporary files. Also, it'd probably be better to normalize spaces too (rustfmt may change spaced indentation levels).
