What implications does this whole area have for high-level languages (such as Racket or Haskell or Python) that feature operations that expose pointer representations (which is all such languages)? Are we mostly saved by not doing these optimizations? Has anyone studied this?

I’d assume that you’re safe if you don’t do any of those optimizations. Optimization is so much easier if the language is memory-safe…
