Majority of modern FPGAs still use 18*18 multipliers with 36-bit result and 18-bit memory blocks. For ... god knows what reason.

Octal is really awesome for working with UTF-8 though. The octal digits rearrange directly to octal digits of the codepoint number, no cross-digit arithmetic/carries needed.

And octal won as the public interface for file permissions. (POSIX eventually standardized the values, effectively making the cryptic symbolic macros obsolete).
