Wanted: A crate that implements a buffered zlib decoder that buffers, say, 32K of uncompressed data by doing the decompression in a separate thread. I think it’d be an easy way to speed up a lot of apps (image decoding, etc.) via pipelining, without much effort.
Ah, OK, that doesn’t sound very CPU intensive then. PNG has that incredibly slow Paeth predictor which takes as long as the zlib decoding even if optimized with SSE4.1…

Yeah, I seem to remember that paradoxically, it's embarrassingly parallel on the encoding/compression end but annoyingly serial when decoding.
