The lack of an esc key was already a deal-killer, but my current MBP will be my last. Apple seems to have stopped giving any shits *at all* about pro users/developers:https://www.pcmag.com/news/362580/core-i9-macbook-pro-cooling-problems-kill-performance …

Way too early to tell. Also, the base model should do fine for most portable dev workloads

Nerp. Deal already killed w/ touchbar fiasco + ~5 years of middling GPU/CPU/memory upgrades. Even if they were to fix the thermals, it won't fix the GPU and driver situation. Apple doesn't sell performance laptops any more, period.

But that’s mainly Intel’s fault (modulo esc). I definitely grant that Apple slacked in recent years, but since iMac Pro they’ve been turning it around. It’s just a slow ship.

iMac Pro GPU isn't even top-end and can't be configured to be either. It's all overpriced and under-powered (which is the opposite of the phone situation, interestingly, and shows which they care about).

I’m just trying to help a friend avoiding a mistake. I’m not saying the iMac Pro is perfect, but it was the first indicator of the “Apple stopped caring about the Mac” narrative turning around. It’s still turning and gonna take a while still & lots is terrible. But looking up.

This was the same reaction we all had to the trashcan; it was a "recommitment" after a period of neglect. Twice bitten and all that.

So many examples; delays on memory upgrades (+ no ability to turn off zram), no ability to pick a serious GPU at every pricepoint, junk/buggy multi-monitor/discrete-gpu support, etc. etc.

I switched to a Surface Book at home because I was tired of the Apple treadmill and… I was kind of underwhelmed. Was trading one set of issues for another. Not thrilled to go back to Apple, though. I feel like there are no great laptop options available. :(

I'm similarly stuck. Except I switched to a Pixelbook. Not thrilled with it or my new MacBook.
