Just one example: There is no DirectWrite API to render a glyph using grayscale antialiasing. Only bilevel (black & white) and LCD subpixel AA are supported. So true. I had to use it a few years ago and still remember the feelings. You write hundreds lines of code and get blurry fonts at the end. The API is noisy and clumsy.
