trolling aside, it's surprisingly hard to find sane languages. go lacks generics, java lacks unsigned, JS lacks non-floats (wtf), Rust has memory safety shit i can never understand, C# and F# are slow interpreted stuffs, D has 2 incompatible std libraries

BTW, we went to an awful lot of effort to try to be familiar to C users. You should have seen the language we started with.

*shrug* No offense taken. IMO, the biggest difficulty was balancing the desires of those who wanted a strongly expression-oriented language like ML with the desires of those who wanted a more conservative C-like syntax (me mostly in the latter camp).

Like, take “let” for example. “let” vs. “let mut” with postfix types is weird coming from C. But the compositionality of having just one syntax of “let PATTERN = EXPR”, instead of multiple forms for mutable, immutable, inferred vs. annotated type, etc. was compelling.
