Isn’t Apple effectively locked in to supporting OpenGL in perpetuity, since Safari supports WebGL?

WebGL is based on GLES, not full GL. I'm not that familiar with the differences, but it's possible that extending a GLES translation layer to support full GL is non-trivial.

Even so, why not just say that macOS is GLES only going forward? I wouldn’t have much of a problem with that.
