Right. So if they do the work to support WebGL on top of Metal, why not just expose that layer to native apps instead of deprecating OpenGL?

You could theoretically write the OpenGL API on top of metal, right? So couldn’t they write WebGL on top of it too?
-
Yeah. So why not just expose that to native apps too? They’ll already have done most of the work.

They may think they have enough platform clout now to push developers to using their preferred interfaces. (And they may.)

I predict most people will just use MoltenVK.

I want a standard implementation of all legacy APIs on top of Vulkan, with a permissive license. The current situation (and not just graphics API) is a depressing mess that needs to be addressed for the benefit of everyone.

Guess so. WebGL is based off GLES, which they already have running on top of Metal. Didn’t they propose a replacement api for browser too some time ago? (largely inspired by Metal, iirc)

Looks like its not going to be affected and that both WebGL 2 and WebGPU is on its way:https://twitter.com/grorgwork/status/1004074501313736704 …
