I guess you mean "use only well-constrained pointer arithmetic" since C has no array access without pointer arithmetic.

Does that mean you've abandoned call-by-reference too? What's your performant alternative?

There's no call-by-reference in C, just passing a pointer by value. And neither that nor the actual call-by-reference in e.g. C++ involves pointer _arithmetic_.
