It's impossible to assess Georgia's voting-law changes without acknowledging the obvious motivation for passing them.https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/04/05/question-about-georgias-election-law-changes-that-has-only-one-answer-why/ …

Exactamundo. Even if people want to pick nits and say that not everything in the laws stinks, the new laws exist because @GOP lost elections and they want to rig the game so they win. There's no other reason they're doing this. "Election security" is a sham.

But why are so many in the media, especially @nytimes, doing exactly that?

Exactly, and there has been enough moments of GA Republicans saying the quiet part out loud to know their motivation for these overtly suppressive bills.

Could it be that voting rules in 2020 were a direct result of an emergency order due to COVID? Also, if the laws are so restricting then why is there more access to voting now than there was in 2018?

I mean, GD! Republicans dont believe anyone but themselves are legitimate office holders. So any law passed on voting is meant to ensure they are the only ones elected.

The only appropriate way to assess Georgia's voting-law changes is to ignore any possible motivation for passing them. Even and especially the "obvious" ones, which tend to be in the eye of the beholder. Do they work? Are they reasonable? That's all that really matters.
