Passwords are a design problem and password managers only improve things so much.

That whole Epic/Story/Task thing is Jirathink. Epics are broad areas of concern. A given story could satisfy several areas of concern, so would be in multiple epics. It's a complex graph, not a tree. There is no hierarchy.

Where/when in life do most people discover that design "is a thing"? I suspect it's never - most people don't realize how things they use are designed by someome. For better and worse. Even in my CS classes we rarely talked about designing - we mostly just built.

If the design profession ever manages to regulate itself, we're going to see a lot of folks become product managers overnight.

Interesting observation: OH: “When looking to hire leaders, I look to people who have lead w/o formal authority. Because on some level, it is easier to lead when people report to you. It is easier to appear as if you are visionary and decisive.” wrapping my head around that.

Dear Managers, It is unethical to deny an employee an internal growth opportunity because they are too valuable to move out of your area. Leadership shortfalls should never be the responsibility of the employee.

Software interfaces undervalue peripheral vision! (a thread) My physical space is full of subtle cues. Books I read or bought most recently are lying out. Papers are lying in stacks on my desk, roughly arranged by their relationships.

Some common loops 1/7 Why does that team seem to always take on too much work?

When "value" becomes a euphemism for "new software features" a company has become self-involved and no longer understands the market. More software is not more value. More features is not more value.

Time-saving trick I learned from a friend: when interviewing for a UX role, ask the interviewer what they think UX is.

I've had many a battle with design teams over underline/float-label only form fields. "But Google does it!" is the most common response. So it's great to see Google publish some of their research that led them towards a more traditional form field design

🔸Actual theory - PDCA loops, empirical process, teamwork, self organisation, value focus. 🔸Espoused "Scrum" theory - Micromanaging while standing up, death by Jira, story point targets, process fetish, "get it done" at all costs, treating smart adults like naughty kids.

I arrive at your website for the 1st time ever. You IMMEDIATELY offer me a 10% discount to sign up for your email list. Here’s what I know. Your product is overpriced. You don’t care about me. Your team isn’t allowed to do user centered work. Your company hires for “culture."

If you hire "the best" and a year later they're "not meeting expectations", wouldn't you wonder, "What did we do to them?"

The puzzle: Outcome oriented work often takes > 2w Teams that have trouble w/1w sprints will have trouble with 2w Teams that do the meaningful >2w work, figure out how to “integrate” frequently to learn and reduce risk (often daily/weekly) Sprints are frequently abused

Not sure about 's "Much of the [design systems] advice and examples out there are for teams that seem to have already figured it out." My observations – including inward – suggest otherwise. We are all still figuring it out together.
