Virgin Galactic’s White Knight 2 carrier aircraft returned to Mojave Air & Spaceport from Spaceport America in New Mexico today. Virgin Orbit’s 747 Cosmic Girl happened to be out while WK2 made several low approaches, resulting in some fantastic photos & video!

To be clear, this image was taken *after* the close approach; seeing two linear trails rather than lots of crud moving in many directions indicates that the spacecraft missed each other.

Crap. Now at 1 in 20 chance of these two satellites colliding this evening at 23:39:35 UTC (18:39:35 EST) almost directly Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is seriously alarming. Those sats -- if they hit -- would be at 900km, scattering debris well above and below that altitude.

Very cool (and scary) video from which shows how crowded low Earth orbit will become over the next 10 years if all proposed launch. And btw this is in addition to the other 20,000 other objects which are already being tracked. Space needs rules!

My spellchecker wants to change BigEndian to Albigensian. Apparently my pull request is intended to eliminate a certain heresy and restore the one true Order of Bytes. 😎

I study genocide. It's been a theme in my academic endeavours for nearly 30 years. More accurately, I study the conditions in the lead up to genocide, be they cultural, social, political, economic, etc... 1/n

A little over a year ago, I didn’t get the call I wanted so badly. I was at a Christmas concert with some of my best friends and I cried for the entire last half of the show because I checked my email during intermission and my dreams of being a Brookie were over. (1/n)

Boeing withdraws from DARPA's Experimental Spaceplane Program, which was the agency's program to develop a hypersonic vehicle that can fly 10 times in 10 days. Boeing in 2017 won DARPA's Phase 2 and 3 contracts for the program, beating two other teams of companies.

End of an era: has closed its doors. I remember browsing the isles in the 90's (before ), looking for best deals, such as hard drives at only $1 per megabyte.

Photographer Reuben Wu uses LED-equipped drones to illuminate mysterious shapes. His latest project is in Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, a nearly featureless white landscape left behind by the evaporation of prehistoric lakes.

every single second a star explodes somewhere in our Universe. they explode in our own galaxy every 100 yrs. these explosions (supernovae!!!) can get as bright as a GALAXY & can form some of the most exotic stuff in our universe: neutron stars & black holes.
