Labour NEC meeting could be another marathon today. Here's one of several items on the agenda.https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-students-wing-nec-momentum_uk_5d7ffe70e4b03b5fc8883d89?5pqn …

Some MPs think this is about settling historic scores. As @MichaelLCrick details in his book on Militant, moderate Labour's students (including future MP @MikeGapes) defeated the Left in 1976 via 'Operation Ice Pick' (named after the assassination weapon that killed Trotsky)

Labour Students and predecessor National Organisation of Labour Students has been the political birthplace of a string of MPs and peers including @tom_watson, @wesstreeting Peter Mandelson, Charles Clarke, Sally Morgan and others.

But left students today argue this is more about challenging the lack of democracy within Labour Students.

Either way, the organisation is one of the last bastions (along with the PLP of course) of 'centrist' opinion within the party.

That alone sounds like a wonderful reason to get rid of it to most normal people.

‘Political birthplace’ isn’t correct at all. It’s a training programmme for neoliberals who want a career in the party.

Good point Paul. With that kind of evidence against it, it's clear Labour Students needs to be abolished ASAP. Thanks for providing the data! 👍

Thanks Paul. Wasn't sure how I felt but after you informed me of all the previous members who became MPs it definitely should be scrapped

That list of MPs alone is a reason to scrap it, some of the prime wreckers of the past 4 years. Mandelson openly said he would work every day to undermine the leadership, Watson is actively rebelling against the Labour official Brexit position etc.
