Close your eyes and try to imagine a red star. Alright, which of the 6 examples did you see in your head? Poll in tweet below 👇pic.twitter.com/k8FadgsyrR

How strong is the visual when you close your eyes? ☝

... I didn't realize people _literally_ see things when they try to visualize them?? I'm firmly #1 from the example image. TIL this is "aphantasia." h/t @nayafia

My hypothesis is that NVLD (nonverbal learning disorder; inability to visualize) and Autism (very visual thinking) are part of the same spectrum. NVLD is only diagnosed in extreme cases because hyper-verbal thinkers are more capable of masking their deficiencies than autists.

(high-functioning NVLD is generally diagnosed as Autism (or maybe Aspergers), ignoring that high-functioning hyper-verbal thinkers actually think quite differently from high-functioning visual thinkers)

NVLD's description seems distinct from aphantasia/inability-to-visualize; perhaps there's a relationship, but I haven't yet heard aphantasia associated w/ any learning/behavior challenges. (to contrary, seems remarked upon by high achievers who never noticed they were atypical.)

Imagine a bell curve with normal being "half visual, half verbal". People who are a little off might actually do better if they can compensate for their weakness.

That's the area where people have high-functioning forms of Autism (Asperger's or HFA). In kids who are more visual, that's pretty noticeable during childhood. If they are too visual it's full-blown Autism not high-functioning Autism.

No one notices the kids who are hyper-verbal at an early age. Not very noteworthy that they aren't visual thinkers. How'd you know? It's only ever diagnosed when they are too hyper-verbal to function. That's why NVLD in the DSM sounds extreme vs aphantasia.

(It's noteworthy that delayed speech/language delay and communication problems are considered an indicator of autism, while high-functioning hyper-verbalism should lead to super-early language acquisition and communication ability)
