Yeah but do you know where "ampersand" comes from? "&" used to be the last letter of the alphabet, so you'd recite "X, Y, Z, & and, per se, and," meaning "& by itself = and."

afaik, it's not because of the alphabet, it's because letters by their own were followed by "per se" when standing one. i.e. I am but a writer, o lord becomes I per se am but a per se writer, o per se lordpic.twitter.com/g3sg15kSPV

OK, I saw a clip on YouTube and now I get what you said, it was exactly what they would recite. It's really weird and difficult to understand unless you see the history of this thing! Now I kind of like this little symbol that survived all this time just a little bit more.

When I learned my alphabet, I ended it with ampersand. Either I am 200 years old or I had a dictionary editor for a mother.
