Excellent post! My thoughts upon reading * When does it make sense for engineers to /not/ be on-call for code they write? * "If you can avoid building something, you should." -- but also implementation != responsibility. Buy can increase risk of robust but brittle.

* For "Make Deploys Easy"... why might they be hard? Is there interesting goal conflict? * Trust the People Closest to the Knives
* QA Gates
* Boring Technology is Great

Excellent piece & points, though I do like QA and prefer unbroken things in some systems, e.g. banking, healthcare, flying airplanes, etc. But solid points, nonetheless, and for most systems.
-
I think most of those systems are usually operating in some degraded mode (i.e. "broken"), whether we like it or not. A good read on that topic: http://web.mit.edu/2.75/resources/random/How%20Complex%20Systems%20Fail.pdf …

That was a really fun read! Since it is hardly ever the case of an approach with no trade-offs - what would you say the greatest problems with this approach?
-
I think the only trade-off is that you have to do the work (both technical and cultural) to be ready to do this stuff. I don’t think there are any other disadvantages, honestly.

Excellent points! At my current job I work on libraries/infrastructure so technically we don’t own the services using our work. Still feedback from the teams using our work in production is crucial in letting us know whether we’re building the right thing
-
Thank you! Yup - the people who use your libraries have a perspective that only they can have, which makes it super important to listen closely to their feedback. I'll be in a similar position soon - first time in years that I won't be working exclusively on backend services :)

Feels good to see all my teams practices and beliefs represented :)

That's great to hear! My kudos to you and your team :-)
