"teaching your code words that someone else thought would be useful." 💔 this. this is the problem with solutions promising to be ready "out of the box." magic only gets you so far when it's guessing at what matters for you.

Just a reminder that Honeycomb won the "Best New DevRel programme" award. That's the kind of team you'd be joining...

Accept the feedback, improve, and move on! It's so awesome! You know what's not awesome? Doubling down - gaslighting people, denying that some language is hurtful or devaluing. Be better! It's much more fun and I bet you'll be happier, and people around you will be happier!

It's happened to me (getting called out), it'll happen to you. It's okay! Saying something sexist or racist (or homophobic, or otherwise devaluing to a group of people) doesn't make you a terrible person! We all grew up with this shit planted in our heads.

And then you know... changing your habits ever so slightly so as to not say the racist / sexist thing again.

White guy tears are so fucking boring. If someone calls you out because something you said is racist, sexist, both, etc how hard is it to say "Thank you for telling me, I didn't know. I'm sorry, I won't say it again."

I noticed it as a really insidious rhetorical trap. Framing these things as you being offended makes it into a choice you are making. You could also "choose" to not be offended, thus eliminating the problem. It's imperative to reframe the problem as one of harm, not offense.

and yeah, the problem is not me being "offended", the problem is that people shouldn't be doing racist and sexist things to begin with, and then further insisting those things aren't racist and sexist rather than just saying "sorry, my bad, that was racist, I won't do it again".

I love it when people insist that they shouldn't be called "white" in the context of explaining why a remark was racist, and that they're annoyed that a woman of color expressed anger in public. Gotta love it. --angry woman of color

Before leaving we exchanged addresses so the kids could be pen pals. Life is nice when we're not assholes to eachother. More experiences like that, please. 2/2

Out for dinner tonight and our daughter met another 3 year old at the restaurant who was visiting from out of town. The two of them played together, sometimes our daughter ate at the other family's table and sometimes the other little one ate at ours. 1/2

Just watched demo using triggers and a derived column to notify the team when it was safe to delete an old feature flagged code path. LOVE seeing how we use our own tools to keep track of tasks and tech debt.

Studying observability and resilience there seems to be a few parallels between: - monitoring vs. observability and - reliability vs. resilience.
