They also smashed in stoplights and set fires and put up half-assed roadblocks. We couldn’t figure out why the police didn’t come.pic.twitter.com/ha4q6Fp4jn

Finally after much destruction and one nasty fight, everyone dispersed. As we headed home we ran into maybe a dozen police vans filled with riot cops coming back to Tin Shui Wai station from elsewhere. An amazing sign of how thin the police here are stretched.pic.twitter.com/ff8UowEAWC

Of course when you attempt to govern with police, and your police are set up for law enforcement, that’s what happens. Also when you rule with police, the best way for people to show their discontent is to act out in a way that attracts police.pic.twitter.com/64keRqWCfC

This isn’t chaotic hooliganism. For all the vandalism, it was targeted and surprisingly controlled. It’s about Beijing’s and HKG’s political failure. In a place with the social trust and development HK has, only a catastrophic meltdown in leadership can cause scenes like this.pic.twitter.com/sGjsu60po1

Truly I am not trying to justify this. It was painful to watch. Given run of a police-less place, residents of one of HK’s poorest districts destroyed facilities that serve them and stole nothing from stores. The point is why? The answer: HK is in advanced political decay.pic.twitter.com/pi44mE7uUx

I would say its the symptom of a malfunctioning government. Hard to blame the symptoms without addressing the causes. Painful to watch for me too, but more painful to see the HKG ignoring voices of people while trying to escalate situation & justify more suppression.

well said. if carrielam/
#hkgov didn't force to launch extradiction bill and execute ERO to launch anti mask law, instead listen to the citizens' real needs, this will not happen! it's them to create a#HKPoliceState. they made all the problems n so they're not qualified to blamepic.twitter.com/lkecNdSVSJ

I would say the political decay is advanced by design. The anarchy the witnessed is exactly the projection of democracy the CCP wishes to present. You have documented their end-product with precision

I don’t buy the theory of the oh so wise and Machiavellian CCP. They don’t have a clue how to fix this mess. Part of the problem is that information will be getting censored up the command chain and the guys at the top will have a totally unrealistic view of the situation.
