Please stop. It’s fine to ask Labour Leadership candidates about their views and record on reproductive rights. It’s a vital issue. But anti-Catholic language and making assumptions about candidates because of their religion isn’t acceptable.

Hard agree. The solution to anti-Semitism isn't replacing it with some kind of 16th-century anti-papism. It is being civil to each other and not making assumptions based on origins/faith etc.

I was brought up Catholic. I went to a Catholic grammar school at a time when it was legal for the priests to beat the crap out of kids and psychologically torture them. Surely you agree - let's get reactionary religions out of politics?

This is really really low Paul. I honestly didn’t expect that.

I would have thought this stuff was beneath you, Paul. Your implication that Long-Bailey is controlled by some puppet master in the Holy See is deeply insulting. It’s quite easy to defend a woman’s bodily autonomy without resorting to anti-Catholic sentiment.

I was brought up Catholic and went to a Catholic school. It's just that for me, being left means defending women's reproductive rights against all reactionary religions.

A deeply sectarian anti-Catholic statement ignoring the plurality of opinions and the experience of many of that faith who are pro choice. A disgraceful comment, withdraw it. [Trademark is the anti-sectarian unit of the ICTU]

Is he really suggesting that a Catholic running for Labour leadership is basically a Vatican plant? Mediaeval stuff.
