They are both rooted in a denial of reality because reality clashes with a cherished prior belief. It's the same denial that is at the root of rejection of evolution, or even a belief in a flat earth.

It is not about denial! It's about leverage and and political gain. Desperate (esp Blue) states will acquiesce to Trump's demands. He's a psychopath, only interested in how this benefits him.
