1) Thanks for the clear explanation, but 2) it makes Trump's actions even scarier than they were five minutes ago,

What did you mean by "Not Congress – that would just reopen the whole can of worms FDR closed in 1934."? Your previous explanation of the FDR era didnt seem to indicate how "Executive branch decides" had desirably different incentives, checks etc than "Congress decides"...

Understandable history of trade and multilateral agreements that keep trade peace in the free world. Trump defies all laws, national and international. It’s plain political thuggery for ‘nationalist’ purposes.

Mr Krugman, could you please expand on this in a future column: “An end to U.S. trade deficits? That’s not something trade policy can or should deliver.” Seems to me that Trump talks about these deficits as a zero sum game, while this is much more nuanced. Can you please explain?

So basically, can we just say the Trump is trying to wreck the international trade system? It doesn't play by his zero-sum rules, and I think that's what his supporters "want," although I don't think they understand the full implications of what they want.

I have evidently resorted to calling him "the Trump", like "the Grinch."
