An easily forgotten point about JavaScript is that it's primarily a C++ scripting language. In the past, many JS language features could only be used from native code. E.g. setters: "image.src" existed in Netscape 3, but it took ten years until you could do the same in plain JS.

IMO, Node's initial success is because it recognized this aspect and just provided thin JS wrappers over its C++ event core. Things went wrong in Nodeland when those thin wrappers turned into 30-level-deep npm dependencies. Complexity should have remained on the native side.
