1. Yes, I always think of them as the broad Bay Area. Two things flow from this. 1) They have increased their dominance - so much for the rise of the rest (aside from NYC & London).
So roughly speaking (SF bay as a whole) 0.1% (7m) of the world's population accounts for about 25% (10B) of the world's venture funding
2. (2). The Bay Area has been noted for its ability to adapt to technology shifts ala Saxenian. But it has also been able to adapt to a major locational shift from suburban to urban. Benefits from having both - suburban campuses for est. cos. urban locations for startups.
