Traditional taxi companies in Norway (where Uber is illegal) have ordering and tracking apps, precomputed and prepaid fares, etc.
I'm not claiming Uber's features only work for Uber. Of course they also work when copied sufficiently well by another organization.

Addison Lee were doing similar model in London long before Uber, but safely. I'm sure there will be more safe competition coming through.

Portland OR had all those features for taxis years before Uber came to town. Then they bought their way in, now all drivers are much poorer.

In Germany Uber driver needs to pay all the taxes&licenses as normal taxi drivers. They are not nearly as successful as in other countries.
