Europe values things like worker and consumer safety, paying employees a living wage, paid sick leave and parental leave, etc.
-
-
-
When a startup's business model is completely dependent on ignoring or circumventing these principles, Europe says thanks but no thanks.
-
A lot of people would like to believe this is why Uber wins, but the real reason is that it's more convenient for users.
-
Simply not true. Uber succeeds by exploiting its drivers so it can afford to undercut its competitors, and by bamboozling the public.
-
Traditional taxi companies in Norway (where Uber is illegal) have ordering and tracking apps, precomputed and prepaid fares, etc.
-
I'm not claiming Uber's features only work for Uber. Of course they also work when copied sufficiently well by another organization.

I don't understand the argument of underpaying drivers, what are they gonna do when autonomous cars take over?
-
Ban them claiming they're unsafe, of course.

Europe lost their way. They hate to lose to American tech companies and regulation is their only weapon.
-
I don't think it's so deliberate. I think it's merely that overregulation and the tall poppy syndrome are established habits.
-
I think it is an unconscious bias.

And the American way is the carte blanche just because it's a 'startup'? Yeah, that works well
#theranos#zenefits#hamptoncreek etc etc -
Far from it; vested interests have huge power in the US as well.
-
Agree, but if vested interests steer the ship in the wrong direction, a little checks and balances can be quite healthy I think

Can we stop spinning Uber as a startup?

Hope you're not commenting re uber? A greedy unscrupulous taxi company that's refusing to abide by the same rules as everyone else?

For Uber it's time to grow up or to break up. Playtime is over.
-
Playtime is precisely where startups create the most value, explore the most ground
-
Value created by Uber so far: zero. And, by the way, Uber ceased to be a startup a long, long time ago.
-
Strongly disagree; Uber creates value every single day. Try being stuck in the middle of London at 2am without ability to e-hail
-
Gett? MyTaxi? Addison Lee? I consistently avoid Uber when I can and never had issues getting home at 2am. Why aren’t you using alternatives?
-
When I'm in the valley I use Lyft, but in London, uber undoubtedly has more drivers. The point is EU government's fear of startups that disrupt
-
EU doesn’t have such a fear, sorry: the proof is simple as there are quite a few competitors operating legally in London. Only Uber is hit.
