This seems a necessary compromise. Without forced terseness, Twitter would just become a glorified blogging platform. We already have those.

Make something for yourself and your friends. If it works, more people will join. That's how Reddit and Twitter both started.

GNU Social has higher character limits and it definitely helps. More context and nuance means less drama.
