The dangerous thing about letting your company become bureaucratic is that when the smart people leave, they won't tell you that's why.

It follows: if you've allowed your company to become bureaucratic, you've decided your business no longer requires smart people

The flip side is that a well run bureaucratic (in the good sense) organization does not REQUIRE a lot of smart people. Some value in that.

That's a very interesting point. It may be true for some industries, but I'm not sure which, if any.

The ones closest to being automated. Bureaucracy as a prototype.

That would also be very interesting. If true it means humans should avoid bureaucratic companies.

Or make hay. Bureaucratise, automate, profit, repeat. All credit to my 1st ever boss who told me to make myself redundant = a valuable skill

A larger problem is smart people leaving due to lack of meritocracy which is higher probability during scale up

When the smart people leave do they ever tell you why? & even if they did who would listen if they are allowed to leave in the first place?

Honestly, people shouldn't ever tell you why they leave. Just an opty to burn bridges & introduce emotion. Play the long game.

I've argued on @ribbonfarm that there is a need for (some) bureaucratization to allow scaling; https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2016/03/17/go-corporate-or-go-home/ … Do you disagree?

It's bit of a paradox. I think organizational structure is useful, but improper implementation prevents independent thinking / contribution.
