It's weird that this is a point of pride. As if, somehow, a five year old has actually come to this (close-minded) thought by himself.

I asked him how he knew this. He insists he figured it out by himself, because there is no heaven (just atmosphere and space).
-
I suspected his older brother told him, but he insists not.

How old were you when you first came to this conclusion? Do you remember what your initial logic was?

Why doesn't he use the time "send good thoughts" to people around the world? Isn't that how atheists help out these days?
-
If I suggested that, he would ask "How do you send thoughts?" And what would I say then?
-
"You think of wishes you would wish for other people" Side note: wishes are x10 more likely to come true if good is wished for someone else
-
"But how do the thoughts get to them from my brain?"
-
They seep into your brain and change your own actions. Gratitude and kindness are habits you can cultivate.
-
Also, thoughts themselves are weird magic things that arent currently explained by the physical science-explained world.

My wife does a prayer every evening. I chime in with what I'm grateful for and what I'm hoping for. It's become something I look forward to!
-
I'm not religious myself, so my "prayer" doesn't involve God, but it feels like a worthwhile habit (like gratitude journaling).

Unhappy flashbacks of my upbringing in the South. Jealous of your children's head start in critical thought. Good work.

So his teacher essentially makes him talk to himself? One of my main concerns in raising a child would be how to avoid these situations.

The atheist's cry - "there is no god and I hate you." I'm praying your son will come to know Jesus as Lord. John 14:6
