Test of how ideological people are about problem x: whether or not they wish people who say x doesn't exist were right.

Relevant, but can't remember who said: "You can't call yourself a real scientist if you don't rejoice when you notice your model is wrong"

It's not just that they don't want to lose an argument. For them, global warming fits into a grand narrative rather than being merely true.

I’d freak out if the skeptics were right. That means we have no idea why the temp is rising and can’t do nothing ‘bout it.

You are just testing whether x is something negative. Everyone agrees that climate change, if real, is bad.

All the climate change skeptics I know absolutely believe the earth is heating and man's behavior is contributing to it.
-
Anecdotally I've seen the opposite in the US. People completely disbelieve when they start from political tribalism - no nuanced view.
-
Well, presumably they can't deny that the earth is heating or that man is contributing to it, so what are they skeptical about then?
-
-
That's a fair argument, but if you already distrust science and experts then it's an impossible calculation.

As if "the world cooking" is the alternative to disallowing an unworkable, expensive, coercive, non-solution to the problem.

Even if you ignore climate change, the push for renewable energy is worth it just in terms of health benefits and sustainability.

Political org promotes those who support cause; sends disconfirmers to gulag. So remainers=confirmers & "science" settled. Stupid skeptics.

I'm not sure if this is related, but my past relationships died because my partners would sooner it died rather than lose a random argument.
