Test of how ideological people are about problem x: whether or not they wish people who say x doesn't exist were right.

E.g. I'd be relieved if climate change skeptics were right. But I think some would sooner the world cook than lose the argument.

It's not just that they don't want to lose an argument. For them, global warming fits into a grand narrative rather than being merely true.

I’d freak out if the skeptics were right. That means we have no idea why the temp is rising and can’t do nothing ‘bout it.

All the climate change skeptics I know absolutely believe the earth is heating and man's behavior is contributing to it.

Anecdotally I've seen the opposite in the US. People completely disbelieve when they start from political tribalism - no nuanced view.

Well, presumably they can't deny that the earth is heating or that man is contributing to it, so what are they skeptical about then?

Ah, the one other angle I've heard skeptics take is "reducing carbon will cost $xxx but only reduce damages by $xxx/n, where n is > 1.

That's a fair argument, but if you already distrust science and experts then it's an impossible calculation.

As if "the world cooking" is the alternative to disallowing an unworkable, expensive, coercive, non-solution to the problem.
