Test of how ideological people are about problem x: whether or not they wish people who say x doesn't exist were right.

E.g. I'd be relieved if climate change skeptics were right. But I think some would sooner the world cook than lose the argument.

Agree. Blind, unflinching devotion should be reserved for sport. Liverpool FC, for example.

You are just testing whether x is something negative. Everyone agrees that climate change, if real, is bad.

similar to the way "told you so" folks are happy when Trump actually does the thing they told you he'd do

Relevant, but can't remember who said: "You can't call yourself a real scientist if you don't rejoice when you notice your model is wrong"

It isn't an argument for science/skepticism. When the risk of ruin exists - the precautionary principle always applies.

I think its fear of the RL consequences of legitimising the skepticism by holding the argument in the first place that leads to shut down.

I’d freak out if the skeptics were right. That means we have no idea why the temp is rising and can’t do nothing ‘bout it.

There is a middle ground : weighing co2 reduction vs mitigating the fx. Have you read The Skeptical environmentalist by @BjornLomborg ?
