Retweet was essentially hacked into use by (.)replying. Separately, eliminating meanness is dystopian thought control. Real = viral

There is a precedent for conversation with far less meanness that's not dystopian thought control: talking face to face.

Less meanness in _your_ conversations. Twitter opens us up the world: gentle and the mean. Mean literally means average.

The same people are nastier to one another on Twitter than they'd be face to face.

Agreed. Fewer consequences. Less impulse control. Still face to face is not scaleable, unless you think of video as face to face. VR?

It might be, in the sense that it might be possible to scale some of the things that make face to face work. Maybe VR, maybe not so literal.

Context replaces face-to-face in subtly triggering good behavior. On DoerHub we did visual multi-layered profiles for users: instant respect

You should try hosting an instance yourselves. Treat it as an experiment, and maybe it will become the tail that wags the dog, like Paypal.

People are notably meaner on Twitter than on Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest. The user experience design matters, I think.
