If there's a shallow controversy happening at the same time as something deeply important, the press will cover the former.

Yet some just grab it bang on? I'm confused and not in any way literally. Except that I want to be. Literally.

Comes down to business model (ad funded) x reader preferences. Shallow pieces get more page views (and thus revenue) than deeper ones.
-
The 'shallow piece' that PG is hinting at is probably the Sam Altman vs Pando fight. Pando is mostly funded by subscriptions.

There's some research on your "shallowness" point. See figure 3.4 in this 1999 piece by John Zaller of UCLA: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiZ3MfL3OzUAhVSY1AKHd_jDpoQFggpMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uky.edu%2FAS%2FPoliSci%2FPeffley%2Fpdf%2FZallerTheoryofMediaPolitics(10-99).pdf&usg=AFQjCNEU449rs0o_1TyF5q6Mnt-AlvkjNQ …

Biz model. Understand the incentives and you'll understand the behavior. Subscription-only pubs don't go shallow. Ad-supported do
-
Is there any good paid pub for politics/economic/finance stuff? I pay for tech stuff. But looking to expand.
