If there's a shallow controversy happening at the same time as something deeply important, the press will cover the former.
Which means there is a bias in the press more pervasive than any left/right one.

Some journalists do a decent job of resisting being pulled right or left, but few avoid being pulled toward shallowness.

the bias is to make their advertisers cash. the few major media companies typically are paid by the same advertisers too.
