I find that "fair" is taken to mean so many things that it isn't useful.

I don't think I ever have. When my 2 year old doesn't want to share, I tell her that it's nice to do so, but "fair" hasn't come up yet.

Probably because the context is always toys in a playground, where fairness is pretty complex, while nice is uniformly simple.
